How Medigap works with Original Medicare

A Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policy pairs with Original Medicare. Medicare pays its share first, then your Medigap plan pays many of the costs Medicare leaves behind — deductibles, coinsurance, and copays. There are no networks, so you can use any provider in the country that accepts Medicare, and the plans are standardized by letter, which makes comparing them refreshingly simple. You add a standalone Part D drug plan for prescriptions.

Plan G

Plan G is the most popular choice for people new to Medicare. After you pay the once-a-year Part B deductible, Plan G covers virtually everything else Original Medicare would leave to you — including the 20% coinsurance and hospital costs. It offers the most predictable budgeting short of the (now closed to new enrollees) Plan F. Learn more in our Plan G guide.

Plan N

Plan N trades a lower monthly premium for a little cost-sharing: you pay the Part B deductible, small copays for some office and emergency-room visits, and any Part B “excess charges” if a provider does not accept assignment. For people who do not visit the doctor often, that trade can mean real savings. Our Plan N guide compares it directly to Plan G.

Foreign travel coverage

Original Medicare generally does not cover care outside the United States. Several Medigap plans — including Plan G and Plan N — add foreign travel emergency coverage, which can help with emergency care during the first 60 days of a trip, subject to a deductible and a lifetime limit. If you travel internationally, this is a meaningful benefit to weigh.

Premium considerations

Because the coverage within a lettered plan is identical from company to company, the difference between carriers comes down to price and how rates are likely to change over time. A lower starting premium is not always the best long-term value, so it is worth comparing the companies offering the same plan. Our cost estimator helps you weigh premiums against expected out-of-pocket costs.

Guaranteed issue rights

The best time to buy a Medigap policy is during your Medigap Open Enrollment Period — the 6 months that begin when you are 65 or older and enrolled in Part B. In that window you have guaranteed issue rights: insurers cannot deny you or charge more because of your health. Certain life events create other guaranteed-issue windows too. Outside those windows, you may have to pass medical underwriting, so timing matters. Not sure whether Medigap or Medicare Advantage fits you better? See our side-by-side comparison.

Medicare Supplement in Salt Lake County: FAQs

Are Medicare Supplement plans standardized in Salt Lake County?

Yes. Medigap plans are standardized by letter, so a Plan G offers the same core benefits no matter which company sells it in Salt Lake County. Because the coverage is identical, the main things that differ between companies are price and service.

Does a Medicare Supplement plan cover prescriptions?

No. Medigap policies do not include drug coverage, so you add a standalone Part D plan alongside one. Going without creditable drug coverage can trigger a lifetime Part D late penalty.

When is the best time to buy a Medigap policy in Salt Lake County?

Your Medigap Open Enrollment Period is the 6 months that start when you are 65 or older and enrolled in Part B. During that window you have guaranteed issue rights, meaning you cannot be turned down or charged more for health reasons.

Can I be denied a Medigap policy?

Outside of guaranteed-issue situations, insurers in most states can use medical underwriting and may decline you or charge more based on health. That is why enrolling during your Medigap Open Enrollment Period, or another guaranteed-issue window, matters so much.

Does Medigap work when I travel?

Yes. Because Original Medicare has no networks, a Medigap policy works with any provider nationwide that accepts Medicare. Several Medigap plans, including Plan G and Plan N, also include limited foreign travel emergency coverage.
